Pharmacology
Anabolic-androgenic steroids act primarily through the androgen receptor. Tissue effects depend on the parent steroid, metabolites, route, exposure, aromatization or 5α-reduction characteristics, and individual biology. A chemical listing by itself does not establish a safe or effective use.
Evidence and medical context
For many older or designer anabolic steroids, modern controlled human evidence is sparse. Where a compound has had therapeutic use, the clinical evidence and approved labeling should not be extrapolated to bodybuilding-style exposure. Safety
Class-level evidence associates nonmedical androgen exposure with suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, infertility and hypogonadism, adverse lipid changes, hypertension and cardiovascular toxicity, erythrocytosis in some contexts, acne/androgenic effects, mood or psychiatric effects in some users, and compound-dependent liver injury. Risk varies substantially by agent and exposure.
